High Hopes for a Rothko Painting at Auction

Published: March 22, 2007

The New York Times

Better known as a prolific donor — especially to his cherished Museum of Modern Art — David Rockefeller has decided to throw his hat into the auction arena, selling a seminal painting by Mark Rothko for what the auction house hopes will be more than $40 million.

With prices for Abstract Expressionist works hitting new highs, Mr. Rockefeller has consigned “White Center (Yellow, Pink and Lavender on Rose),” a 1950 canvas, to Sotheby’s for its May 15 sale of contemporary art. Sotheby’s $40 million estimate is nearly twice the previous auction record for a Rothko painting — $22.4 million, set at Christie’s in 2005 — and is clearly a gamble that the Rockefeller name will make the painting more valuable.

“This may be the last time you see it here,” Mr. Rockefeller, 91, said yesterday, gesturing toward the painting, which was hanging in solitary splendor on a prominent wall in his Rockefeller Center office.

The painting is a particularly sensuous example of Rothko’s abstract work during his most important years. It will be the star of the sale at Sotheby’s, which has consistently lagged behind Christie’s in recent years and has been aggressive about securing prestigious property for this spring’s auctions. While experts at both houses said they had offered Mr. Rockefeller a guarantee — a minimum sum the seller receives regardless of a sale’s outcome — market experts and dealers said Sotheby’s had trumped Christie’s by offering him $46 million.

For watchers of the art market, the big question is whether that gamble will pay off.

Mr. Rockefeller has owned the painting since 1960, when he bought it for less than $10,000 from Eliza Bliss Parkinson, the niece of Lillie P. Bliss, one of the three founders of MoMA. Mrs. Parkinson had bought the painting from Rothko in 1960 through the artist’s dealer, Sidney Janis.

Back then, abstract paintings were not particularly Mr. Rockefeller’s cup of tea. He gravitated toward more conventional works, particularly Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings. But he said that Dorothy C. Miller, the first curator hired by MoMA (in 1934), urged him to acquire the Rothko, with its luminous horizontal bands of color.

Mr. Rockefeller was a vice president of Chase Bank in 1960 and had played a role in forming its art committee. While Chase was one of the first institutions to form an important corporate art collection, he said, most of his fellow bankers were too conservative even to consider something as adventurous as a Rothko.

So with Ms. Miller’s endorsement, Mr. Rockefeller scooped it up for himself, and since then it has always hung in his office, enjoying pride of place as his first Abstract Expressionist painting. (Now his collection also includes works by Willem de Kooning and Sam Francis.)

Mr. Rockefeller’s name is most closely associated with his gifts to MoMA, including a $100 million pledge, the largest cash gift in that institution’s history, in April 2005. He has also bolstered the museum’s holdings by donating priceless paintings, sculptures and drawings by masters including Cézanne, Gauguin, Matisse and Picasso.

John Elderfield, MoMA’s chief curator of painting and sculpture, said Mr. Rockefeller had called him before consigning the painting to Sotheby’s. “He asked me if this was something we had to have,” Mr. Elderfield said. “We don’t need it. We already have five Rothkos from the 1950s.”

Mr. Rockefeller said: “I’ve given the Modern a great many paintings and am giving them more, but the museum already has so many Rothkos. I can use the proceeds for other things.”

He said that in November, during a periodic appraisal of his art collection, he noticed to his surprise that of all his paintings, the Rothko had appreciated in value the most. “That got me thinking,” he said.

He chose Sotheby’s over its archrival, Christie’s, he said, because Sotheby’s experts had approached him about selling it first.

While Tobias Meyer, director of contemporary art at Sotheby’s, confirmed that the house had given Mr. Rockefeller a guarantee, he would not disclose the amount. The $46 million figure has been circulating among dealers, collectors and auction house experts. Mr. Rockefeller declined to discuss his financial arrangements with Sotheby’s and said it was too soon to say what he planned to do with the proceeds from the auction, although he added that much of it would go toward philanthropic causes.

In the meantime, he said, he is trying to keep up with developments in contemporary art. On Monday he returned from London, where he stopped by the Tate Modern to see what was on view.

“And from time to time when I’m in New York, I go to galleries with Glenn and John,” he said, referring to Glenn D. Lowry, director of the Museum of Modern Art, and Mr. Elderfield. “Its not always my taste, but I’m always open to seeing what’s new.”

As a musician, I was upset to read something about painting auction.

40 million dollars for Painting is too much!

Art needs financial supports but this is almost like wasting money and showing off your wealth.

Art is to share emotion and feeling. Sometimes, I feel those kind of abstract paintings by famous painters are nothing different from those expensive brands selling brand's name, such as Gucci, Hermes etc.

Art should not be like stuff you buy in store, although we are living in the world full of capitalism, the Arts should always be remain as the object that brings our life color and happiness by touching our emotion.

A TRUE STORY - VERY SHOCKING

Very Shocking.... .
This is a real story of a young college girl who passed away last month in Pasir Ris.

Her name was Priya. She was hit by a truck.

She was working in a call center. She had a boy friend named Shankar.

Both of them were true lovers. They always talked on the phone.

You would never find her without handphone. In fact she also changed her cell connection from M-One to Starhub, so that both of them can be on the same network, and save on the cost.
She used to spend half of the day talking with shankar.
Priya's family knew about their relationship. . Shankar was very close to Priya's family as well. (Just imagine their love) .
Before she passed away she always told her friends 'If I pass away please burn me with my handphone' she also said the same thing to her parents.
After her death, people cld'nt carry her body, A lot of them tried to do so,but still can't. Everybody had tried to carry the body, the results were the same.
Eventually, they called a person known to one of their neighbours, who can speak with the soul of dead person and who was a friend of her father.
He took a stick and started speaking to himself slowly.
After a few minutes, he said 'this girl misses something here.' Then her friends told that person about her intentions to burn her with her phone.

He then opened the grave box and place her phone and sim card inside the casket. After that they tried to carry the body. It! was then moved easily and they then carried her into the van.
All of us were shocked. Priya's parents did not inform Shankar that Priya had passed away..

After 2 weeks Shankar called Priya's mom.....

Shankar :.....'Aunty, I'm coming home today. Cook something nice for me.

Don't tell Priya that I'm coming home today, I wanna surprise her.'

Her mother replied..... 'You come home first, I wanna tell you something very important.'
After he came, they told him the truth about Priya.
Shankar thinks that they were playing a fool. He was laughing and said 'don't try to fool me - tell Priya to come out, i have a gift for her. Please stop this nonsense'.
Then they show him the original death certificate to him.
They gave him proof to make him believe. (Shankar started to sweat) He said... 'Its not true. We spoke yesterday.. She still calls me.

Shankar was shaking.
Suddenly, Shankar's phone rang. 'see this is from Priya, see this....' he showed the phone to priya's family. all of them told him to answer. he talked using the loudspeaker mode.
All of them heard his conversation.
Loud and clear, no cross lines, no humming.
It is the actual voice of Priya & there is no way others could use her sim card since it is nailed inside the grave box

They were so shocked and asked for the same person's
(who can speak with the soul of deal persons) help again. He brought his master to solve this matter.

He & his master

worked for 5 hours.

Then they discovered one thing which really shocked them....

Advertisement is recognizing as a very power full tools in today's world. A good ad can dramatically draw an incredible number of customers, and extensively promote business grow. A bad ad, on the other hand, might not attract people instead it may detract people from using the business services or products. Overall the influence of advertisement is a significant, because it can control people's thought. Therefore, designers of advertisement will always be able to find a place and this society, which will pay highly for their creative language.

The ad is overall effective. It uses typical marketing strategy such as making the customers feel that the business is sensitive to their pricing, option, and convenient needs. In terms of language, it uses a mixture of connotations and picturesque language to help potential customers imagine the products as well as understand the various options that they provide. The use of the ad's language is to be commented in that it does have a certain straightforward tone. This works to the ad's advantage in making it sounds more sincere and not simply like businesses that say anything or do anything to get people to spend their money. There is not anything too creative in this ad in terms of trying to crack a joke or come up with catchy slogans that make it stands out. However, this might not necessary be a bad thing. It certainly does not run the risk of potentially offending people who might feel attacked by the certain jokes.

The ad, next, goes on to more details about the many products the business offers.

Music scholars versus musicians

Today, many people compare between music scholars and musicians. Yes, they are different in the way of approaching music, and they have different ability to express music. But in my opinion, this is not a matter of comparison, because music has own the two aspects, the intellectual part and performing part. We must love music, and hear music with understanding. A student who has passion on music, will probably try to understand intellectually as well. And ideally, a good musician has both ability to think of music scholarly, and to perform what he/she intend to.

First of all, most of the music scholars who are only with the excellent guidance of professional competence and ability are difficult to get good result. And of course the solid theoretical basis of music teaching is important. But it is not enough to only have theoretical foundation to become a good musician, because music has to be played to people - it is not to be kept in your mind or papers.

Secondly, music scholars and musicians(performers) tend to express music differently. For example, music scholars sit in front of desks and only think about how to analyze music, while performers tend to think how to express music well in order to reach the audience's heart. But it is always not enough to approach music one-sided, because music is mixture of intellect and emotion.

In conclusion, a good musician must have both abilities to analyze music with brain, and express music with his/her instrument, the technique to play instrument, and expressive heart.

what music means to me

When I was young, I didn’t realize that how great classical music means to me, I also didn’t know how was I lucky person doing the wonderful work. The time turns me to grow up with classical music. Gradually I realized that I couldn’t live without music, my instrument.

Now, I feel classical music is most abstract art in the world, it is so expressive, and imagination of sound makes my soul to experience catharsis. My life is more interesting now; when I am practicing or performing I am always touched by multicolored splendor of music.

But being a good musician is also difficult. Musician is not just reading a music score and practice, but also need to learn many musical style, music history, and composers … a good musician must have ability to tell audiences different styles from Baroque music to modern music, and each composers' own understanding of music and personality.

As a musician, my purpose is to learn music knowledge and practice as much as I can.
From now on, I will never stop raising my individual accomplishment and try to deepen the understanding about music. And I also wish my experience and musical thoughts will help more people to understand and love classical music. and that will be the honor of my life.
